From game jam to $1K/month — a monetization roadmap

Every game jam, I see incredible games that die 48 hours after the jam ends. The dev gets feedback like “you should totally keep working on this!” and then… nothing happens.

Here's a practical roadmap for taking a jam game from prototype to $1K/month in revenue. This isn't a guaranteed path, but it's the framework I've seen work repeatedly.

Phase 1: Validate (Week 1 after the jam)

Before adding any monetization, answer one question: do people actually come back to play?

  • Put your jam game on itch.io with a free download
  • Track downloads vs. return visits (itch.io analytics are basic but enough)
  • If fewer than 5% of downloaders come back, the game needs more work
  • If 5%+ come back, you have something worth building on

Phase 2: Choose ONE monetization model (Week 2–3)

Don't try to do everything. Pick one:

ModelBest forRevenue (10K MAU)
Premium ($2.99–$9.99)Story / puzzle gamesOne-time ~$1K–5K
Cosmetic shopGames with avatars~$500–2K/mo
Battle passGames with daily loops~$1K–3K/mo
Rewarded adsCasual / mobile~$300–800/mo
Supporter packFan-favorite gamesOne-time ~$500–2K

The choice depends on your game's loop, not your preference. A puzzle game with no daily loop shouldn't have a battle pass.

Phase 3: Implement simply (Week 3–6)

The #1 mistake I see: over-engineering monetization.

Your first implementation should be embarrassingly simple:

Cosmetic shop? 5 items, 3 price points. That's it.

Battle pass? 20 tiers, 30-day season. Done.

Rewarded ads? 3 placements, test which converts best.

You can always add complexity later. Ship simple, learn from data.

Phase 4: Iterate with data (Month 2+)

Track exactly 3 metrics:

01

Conversion ratewhat % of players spend money?

If < 2%, your pricing or value prop is off.

02

ARPUaverage revenue per user per month

If < $0.10, you need more monetization depth.

03

Day-7 retentionare paying players sticking around?

If drops after adding monetization, you're too aggressive.

The reality check

$1K/month is achievable with ~5K–10K MAU and a single well-implemented monetization mechanic. That's not “going viral” territory. That's “posted on a few subreddits and got featured in an itch.io collection” territory.

The biggest barrier isn't technical — it's knowledge. Most jam devs know how to make games but don't know the business patterns that make games sustainable.

For anyone looking to go deeper on any of these models, there are some great focused resources out there. Happy to share what helped me in the comments.
